Jean Depara (1928-1997) launched his career as the official photographer of celebrated Zairian singer Franco. Prowling bars and clubs, the night owl Depara became the key chronicler of Kinshasa social life in the era when the Rumba and Cha Cha defined the citys rhythm. His photographs show an Africa stripped of its conventional social codes, where hipsters reign supreme.
