This project, The Construction of Theatrical Dialogue in Spanish Comic Theater (1898-1936): The Discourse of Humor in its Social Context focuses on how the language of popular one-act plays creates comic effects that dehumanize characters and thereby represent the grotesque reality of Spain. My dissertation examines the cultural meaning of this popular theater by showing the neglected seriousness that is hidden behind the comic mask.
